I remember so well this episode from work a friend of mine told me. Even though it’s years and years ago and she might not even remember it herself. But if she does and reads this, she might correct me on a few details I’ve added or deducted over the years. But I do think I remember the meaning of the story correctly and that’s why I remember it at all. I think another reason why it’s stuck is because it’s something you come across a lot at workplaces. In different forms naturally cause not everyone works at a coffee shop, but still. It’s the same underlying attitude.
So what happened was that my friend worked for a coffee shop in a quite big town in Sweden. One of her work colleague drops a glass on the floor – or something along those lines. The manager sees this and absolutely lets her have it in front of other staff and visitors at the coffee shop. A bit later in the day the manager complains to my friends about the useless employee and my dear friend said this, which is what’s the beauty of this story;
” Yes, you might be right. But all of us who heard you – we won’t remember how clumsy she was, but what an idiot you were.”
I can’t really stand when people be-little others regardless of the situation. Especially if the person doing it, is in a position of power over the other and doing it in front of others. You might think you have the right to tell someone off and justify it with “I’m just giving honest feedback”.
Anyway, just thought of that episode and wanted to share. I thought it was “Clock Clean” as we say in Sweden. Which would be translated something like “bang on” or “dead on target” over here.
